Nature Given

Why should we use essential oils? What should we be cautious of?

I often sit and look out into the world and wonder; I look out in ahh at nature, at buildings, and how they mesh. Everything on this earth has placed and has evolved with a purpose. One thing remains the same, we are the care takers of this earth. Essential oils to me are what God has given us. They are ancient. Even if you don’t believe in the Bible, it is a historical text, essential oils are there. In Mathew 2:11 Frankincense and Myrrh were given by the Magi to the Christ child. Now Magi priests of Persia, are educated and in this time they are who everyone wants to learn from. For three Magi to travel and give Frankincense and Myrrh to a baby, was like giving life to the child in this time. The Bible states that Frankincense was worth more than gold and more than a years wages, this was the antibiotics of this time. To give these items to this child meant, they felt this child was so important. Frankincense and Myrrh were given to protect the child’s life and the mother’s.

WOW… these essential oils were that important to give. Of course this is not the first time essential oils were mentioned, The Healing Oils of the Bible by Dr. Stewart is amazing book that discusses the different healing oils found throughout the Bible. Trees and oils have been burned in the Bible to clean an area from infection, David even used Hyssop in Psalm 51.

Essential oils are not only found in the Bible but also the Egyptians, Greeks, and the Chinese. The Egyptians are said to use oils as a sunblock, bug repellant, and also to look young. Greeks used them mostly as perfumes and the Chinese still use them today.

Why did I begin using Essential oils? I began using essential oils because I wanted to get back to what is natural and reconnect with my body. I am pretty in-tuned with my body, I know how I will react to certain things and when I am in the process of getting sick. After I started using essential oils, I truly can feel the difference in my own body. I feel grounded and solid, kind of hard to describe. I didn’t even start using them with the intention of talking about them. But it was so life changing I had to share information with others and help them on their journey to wellness. Plus when I began diving into the research, there was no way I could keep quiet.

THERE IS ALWAYS A BUT… With everything we want to be safe. Essential oils are highly concentrated. It can take 63 pounds of Melissa to make a 5Ml bottle, 60,000 rose blossoms to get one ounce of rose oil… one drop contains a lot. To help put it in perspective 1 drop of peppermint oil is about 26 cups of peppermint tea.

You should always follow your companies guide lines for using oils and use a carrier oil if skin irritation occurs. You really only need to use 1-2 drops of an essential oil to feel effect, a little goes a long way. The three ways we use essential are aromatically, internally, and topically.

In the diffuser in my living room I sometimes put 3-7 drops, depending on how many oils I am blending together, and I my home is an open concept… YOU CAN SMELL IT throughout the downstairs and even a little up stairs. I also have a diffuser in every room. You are subjected to aromatherapy when entering my home and depending on vibes in the home will determine what is diffusing. I love putting a blend of citrus fresh with peppermint in the morning to wake up the house and  lavender in my sons room, cedarwood or cypress around the house at night. When there is work or cleaning to be done, lemon, lemongrass, or tea tree are usually on to give the house a clean feeling and to help focus the mind. There are infinite possibilities to what you can diffuse depending on the vibe you would like.

  • You can also smell the oil right out of the bottle, just take 10 deep breaths.

  • If your shopping for a diffuser you want to find a diffuser that does not get hot. If your diffuser gets hot it can degrade the essential oil when diffusing. Ultra sonic technology diffuser are the ones I use.

If you are ingesting oils use a glass cup, stainless steel bottle, or even veggie capsules. Water and oil do not mix so I shake my stainless steel bottle so the oil is not sitting on the top or you can even add a little honey or carrier oil to allow the oil to bind to something. You might ingest an oil if you are seeking an aid in digestion. I add 1-2 drop of lemon and 1-2 drop of peppermint to my 40oz bottle (I try for the one and sometimes two fall). I add the oil to aid my digestion and promote liver and kidney function this is my natural daily detox that is soft on my body, the peppermint gives my water a crisp feeling and taste which wakes me up. Of course I place different oils in my daily tea depending of the day i am trying to take on.. i.e 1 drop of lavender for stress or 1 one drop of Young Living’s Theives blend when people around me are sick.

  • Adding too many drops of lemon oil to your water and place your body if detox mode. A f

When applying topically some oils you can apply neat (directly to skin undiluted) but can always use a carrier oil. Citrus Oils you shouldn’t put on your skin if you will be going out into The Sun, such as: lemon, orange, bergamot, lime, grapefruit… it can cause burning or blisters on the skin since they photo synthesize. Warmer oils such as black pepper (which is great if you need an energy boost), cinnamon, or clove should be applied with a carrier if they irritate your skin. Some times I use a carrier it depends on where I am placing the oil.

About 1 teaspoon of carrier oil for every 2-6 drops, of the oil irritates the skin apply more carrier oil, for adults.  For kids up to five years of age 1 Tablespoon for ever 1-3 drops, For kids 5-10 of age, 1 Tablespoon for every 3-6 drops of essential. You can also use more carrier oil if you need it.

  • NEVER APPLY AN OIL IN YOUR EYE OR EAR CANAL. If you happen to get some oil into your eye, apply carrier over your eye to draw it out.

  • The bottoms of your feet, wrists, behind the ears, back of neck, or over stomach. You can also add it to lotions.

Using the oils daily can really change the way you feel. Some changes will be noticed overnight other changes will take time. Become oily! I use different oils depending on my mood or even the vibe I feel in the house. When we are joyful and having fun orange and peppermint go in the diffuser; when stress levels rise lavender, lemon, and peppermint mint. Don’t be afraid to create your own blends, you might be surprised with the results. There are also a lot of resources and recipes out there.
