Almond Oil

Almond oil (Oleum amygdalae, scientific name) is another base I use to dilute my essential oils. Because of the amazing benefits, it has also been added to my lotion mixture at times, depending on the season. Using almond oil as a carrier oil may have more benefits than you think; you may want to add it to your cabinet and you may find yourself using it for other reasons as well.

Historically, almond oil has been used by the ancient Chinese (and other ethnicities) to treat dry skin conditions even cardiovascular issues. The chemical constituents of almond oil seem to be a “good cholesterol”, meaning it could potentially have cardiovascular benefits. (Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice by Ahmad, 2010, volume 16, Issue 1)

Almond Oil can be used either topically or orally for many different reasons some include:

  • Healing and moisturizing dry skin

    • some research shows it helping with psoriasis and eczema

    • Known as an excellent emollient

    • Comedogenicity grade 2 on a 0-5 scale.

      • This means it is great for people suffering from acne.

  • Cleaning teeth without wearing down enamel

  • Hair

    • You can create your own shampoo or even using it as a hot oil treatment.

  • There are even some reports of it being used as a colon cleanser

    • 4-6 drops of sweet almond oil into your juice, smoothie, or milk before going to sleep.

  • Soothing chapped lips

  • Makeup remover

  • Lowering cholesterol

Almond oil is full of healthy fats (omegas 3,6,9), vitamin E, Vitamin K, and traces of other acids.  The Journal of Nutrition had an article in 2002 regarding a research study on the effects of almonds and almond oil, as it relates to lowering LDL (lower density lipids) in the body.  Their finding did show that “…nut consumption is associated with favorable plasma lipid profiles and reduced cardiovascular risk… consumption of almonds or their oil can be an effective strategy to lower total and LDL.” The constituents make almond oil have numerous therapeutic properties.

  • Anti-inflammatory- when ingested and used topically

  • Immune booster- when used topically and internally

  • Some mild Anti-oxidant properties

  • Muscle relaxing capabilities when used as a massage oil if stressed

  • anti-dandruff

  • A mild Laxative

**Safety**If you choose to use almond oil internally I suggest considering not consuming alcohol with it. There have been reports of pancreatitis when used together. AND… If you are allergic to nuts, you should probably use an alternative carrier oil.

I never realized there were so many benefits from nature surrounding us until I started using them and researching them. As I continue to switch products in my household one by one, there is also a cost saving as well. A lot of these things are found in my kitchen.

I have also learned one item in different forms, can provide your body with different benefits. Example. Lemons, Lemon oil, Lemon essential oil, Lemon zest… each does something different too and for your body. I hope to share my explorations with you in the coming weeks as we continue together on our wellness journey.
